Chevy Chase — Glendale, CA

18 Caissons on a Steep Hillside Near a Busy Road

The Chevy Chase project in Glendale combined several challenging site conditions.

The property was located on a very steep hillside and immediately adjacent to a busy traffic street. The drilling operation also had to work around existing oak trees, creating additional restrictions on equipment positioning and access.

Drilling Through Extremely Hard Rock

As drilling progressed, the crew encountered blue rock, an extremely hard formation that was difficult to break using conventional drilling methods.

To overcome the hard-rock conditions, Zone Bolt utilized a coring auger to continue drilling through the formation.

The drilling operation required careful coordination around the existing oak trees, steep terrain and nearby traffic while maintaining progress through the difficult rock conditions.

18 Caissons Over Approximately 40 Days

Zone Bolt ultimately drilled 18 caissons using the coring auger.

The complete drilling operation took approximately 40 days, reflecting the difficult ground conditions and challenging work environment.

Project Challenges

  • Very steep hillside
  • Work immediately adjacent to a busy traffic street
  • Existing oak trees around the drilling area
  • Extremely hard blue rock
  • Specialized coring auger required
  • 18 caissons drilled
  • Approximately 40 days of drilling operations

This project demonstrates Zone Bolt's experience working in steep hillside environments, difficult rock conditions and highly constrained urban locations.
