The Coy Drive project in Sherman Oaks presented an unusually difficult access and site-preparation challenge.
The access opening was so narrow that the existing rooftop structure over the access door had to be disassembled before the drilling equipment could enter the work area.
Even after gaining access, there was not enough room for the drilling machine to maneuver and turn inside the site.
Building Temporary Shoring for Machine Access
To create a stable working area, Zone Bolt immediately began constructing a temporary shoring wall. The area behind the wall was then filled with suitable compactable soil.
After the fill was placed and properly compacted, drilling operations began.
During drilling, the temporary shoring wall began to fail and the soil started moving. Rather than stopping the project, the crew immediately constructed a second backup shoring wall to provide additional support and stabilize the area.
The additional shoring worked effectively and allowed drilling operations to continue.
Drilling Into Bedrock
Once the work area was stabilized, Zone Bolt drilled six 36-inch piles approximately 35 feet into bedrock.
The project required careful coordination between access, temporary site stabilization and drilling operations to safely maintain the working area throughout the foundation drilling process.
