The Girla Club project in Santa Monica presented a different type of drilling challenge: low overhead utility wires directly above the drilling area.
The overhead wires were positioned so close to the drilling equipment that the standard Kelly bar could not be safely used without creating a potential clearance issue.
Modifying the Equipment for Restricted Overhead Clearance
To address the problem, Zone Bolt changed the machine's standard Kelly bar to a significantly shorter Kelly bar.
The shorter Kelly bar reduced the height of the drilling equipment and allowed the crew to perform the required drilling while maintaining the necessary clearance from the overhead wires.
This project required more than simply bringing a machine to the site. The drilling equipment itself had to be adapted to the physical limitations of the property.
Project Challenge
-
Low overhead utility wires
-
Utility line positioned directly above the drilling area
-
Standard Kelly bar created insufficient overhead clearance
-
Equipment modified with a shorter Kelly bar
-
Drilling performed within a highly restricted vertical workspace
This project demonstrates Zone Bolt's ability to adapt drilling equipment to challenging site constraints, including restricted overhead clearance.
All work around energized utility lines should be planned and performed in accordance with applicable utility requirements, site-safety procedures and required clearances.
